- AIDS is the leading cause of death for African American women between the ages of 25 & 34.
- Women of color represent more than three-fourths (76%) of AIDS cases reported to date among women in the U.S.
- Every 16 seconds, a woman is infected with HIV the virus that causes AIDS.
- HIV/AIDS is the 3rd leading cause of death in women ages 25 - 44 years.
- AIDS is the 6th leading cause of death in young people ages 15-25 years.
- Heterosexual contact accounts for 1/2 of all new AIDS cases.
- There were over 57,000 reported cases of women infected by heterosexual contact at the end of 2001.
- As of June 2004, there were 5,255 reported female HIV cases in Dallas, Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Tarrant County. - Texas Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/STD Prevention.
