  • AIDS is the leading cause of death for African American women between the ages of 25 & 34.
  • Women of color represent more than three-fourths (76%) of AIDS cases reported to date among women in the U.S.
  • Every 16 seconds, a woman is infected with HIV the virus that causes AIDS.
  • HIV/AIDS is the 3rd leading cause of death in women ages 25 - 44 years.
  • AIDS is the 6th leading cause of death in young people ages 15-25 years.
  • Heterosexual contact accounts for 1/2 of all new AIDS cases.
  • There were over 57,000 reported cases of women infected by heterosexual contact at the end of 2001.
  • As of June 2004, there were 5,255 reported female HIV cases in Dallas, Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Tarrant County. - Texas Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/STD Prevention.
  • Women are the fastest growing segment of the HIV/AIDS population-heterosexual transmission is the largest factor.
  • 11% of new AIDS cases are people 50 years of age and older.
